Fish is almost extinct off the Lebanese coast
2:41 AM
In the Mediterranean off the Lebanese coast fish is almost extinct. If years ago a fisherman could catch 40 kilograms of fish per day, nowadays they only catch 1-2 kilograms. The lack of relevant laws has allowed for over-fishing with the help of dynamite and compressors. In addition, industrial sewage containing copper, vanadium and zinc has been being dumped into the sea. As the Middle East Online reports, there are about 8000 fishermen in Lebanon and they are now living in poverty. As the fishermen themselves say, they used to earn 500 dollars per week and therefore had enough money to travel a lot and to buy expensive clothes. Now they are making only 200 dollars per month which is way lower than the minimum wage. The head of the fishing department says that the situation is very grave and the law-making process is slowed down by lack of funds and political resistance.
