Preliminary results of Mauritania’s election have been announced
6:27 AM
The Middle East Online reports on the results of the recent presidential election in Mauritania. According to the preliminary results, more than 52 pro cent of votes were given to the general who initiated the military coup last August and toppled the country’s first elected leader. Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz vowed to fight the spread of disease, raise the level of education in the country and develop Mauritania’s infrastructure. Apart from that, he promised to “fight terrorism in all its forms” by solidifying the resources that the army relies on. The other four presidential candidates, among them the parliament’s speaker, called the election a charade intended to legitimize the coup. They believe that the election was rigged.
