Kuwait's Court releases writer and liberal activist
8:39 AM
Kuwait's Court of Appeals acquitted Monday a leading writer Mohammed Abdul-Qader al-Jassem and released the secretary general of the liberal National Democratic Alliance Khaled al-Fadhalah, both sued in separate slander lawsuits filed by the Gulf country's prime minister. They both spent 10 days in prison. Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser al-Ahmad al-Sabah filed a lawsuit against Jassem, 54, for articles and books that contained too critical remarks of the government. On April 1, Jassem was sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to pay a $17,500 fine for slandering the prime minister. Fadhalah was sentenced on June 30 to three months in jail on charges of slandering Sheikh Nasser after allegedly accusing him of collaborating with others in money laundering in December.
