UN chief calls on Israel to stop settlements construction

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank
and East Jerusalem illegal and must get halted. UN chief is in the Middle East to persuade Israeli and Palestinian leaders to restart peace talks. Israel's plan to build 1,600 more homes in East Jerusalem has caused tensions in the region and in relations between US and the Jewish state. Palestinian authorities has said the plan is a considerable obstacle to resuming negotiations. The UN, along with Russia, the EU and the US made up a quartet of Middle East mediators.
