UNESCO director general candidate from Egypt couldn’t secure a victory
5:19 AM
A candidate from Egypt for the post of UNESCO director general, notorious for his anti-Semitism, couldn’t secure an absolute majority for himself in the third voting round. He, however, is leading with 25 votes. Ex-minister of foreign affairs of Bulgaria is second with 13 votes. As Yahoo! News reports, the fourth round will be held today, on 21 September. The Egyptian candidate, Faruq Hosni, can become the first head of UNESCO from the Arab world. However, his past promises to “burn Israeli books myself if I found any in libraries in Egypt” have turned many people against him. After all, he wants to become the head of an organisation dealing with educational, scientific and cultural issues and promoting tolerance in the world.
