Aspiring students at the United School of Al Yahar in Al Ain gear up for Science Olympiads
Two teams have been going under vigorous training to take part in Science Project Olympiads ‘I-SWEEP’ and ‘INEPO’ next month in the USA and Turkey, respectively.
Two teams at the United School of Al Yahar in Al Ain, UAE are now busy with finalizing their projects to compete against hundreds of other high school students in two international science project Olympiads, the school management announced. The students’ applications to join the competitions were reviewed and accepted by the respective Olympiad committees and it is the first time any team from the UAE is attending these science events.
The first Olympiad called ‘I-SWEEEP’ is the International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, and Environment) Project Olympiad and at the same time a groundbreaking science fair open to high school students from all over the world. The contest aims to create an educational platform for young researchers in which they present their innovative projects to take on today’s challenges in energy, engineering, and environment.
Bringing in decades of international educational experience to the UAE, the United School of Al Yahar has formed two teams with two students each to take part in I-SWEEP, which is taking place this year from 4-9 May at George R. Brown Convention Center, Houston, USA. I-SWEEEP is a non-profit educational organization in the USA with a mission to establish college preparatory K-12 schools focusing on math, science, engineering, and computer technologies in an effort to provide a world-class education to public.
The first team composed of Abdulla Musallam Bin Ham Al Ameri and Eymen Yavuz Ertekin will be presenting their project titled ‘How to reduce the effects of Global Warming’ at I-SWEEEP, which attracted 470 top projects from 70 countries and 43 U.S. states to Houston last year.
INEPO - International Environmental Olympiad The second competition in which again another team with two students of the United School of Al Yahar participating is called INEPO – International Environmental Olympiad. According to the organizers, INEPO, which is being organized in Istanbul, Turkey since 1993 has been encouraging students at the ages of 13-19 to study ways to save our environment.
The team’s project is titled “Go Green: The effects of planting trees on climate”. The participants are Tamara Naim Mohammed Al Kadi and Aisha Mohamed Abdalla Khalfan Makhloof. The students of the United School of Al Yahar will be presenting their environmental project at INEPO, which attracted projects from 44 countries in 2010. This year’s event is slated to take place from 18-21 May.
Explained Mr. M. Fatih Kok, General Manager of United School of Al Yahar: “Participating in international science Olympiads has been one of our priorities as such events help broaden our students’ vision, enable interaction with other cultures and promote our school and the UAE at a global level. We also would like to express our sincere gratitude for the continuous support of the country’s visionary leaders, officials at the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), our parents, teachers and staff. We strongly believe our students will do their best in these two international competitions and represent the UAE abroad on a very special platform.”
